Notes for Jeremiah Harrington: General Notes:
Jeremiah Harrington and Anne Lyons, born in the late 1700’s, both of County Cork Ireland were married in the early 1800’s. The Harrington and Lyons families lived near each other in three locations in the town of Dunmanway, County Cork.
The penal laws that restricted Irish Catholics from every public office, owning land and the right to practice their faith were repealed in the late 1700’s. This is about the time our ancestors, Jeremiah Harrington and Anne Leehane (Lyons) were born. In 1800 the Act of Union was passed between Britain and Ireland. This made Ireland subject to the parliament at Westminster. The destiny of Ireland was now no longer decided by Irishman. The most prominent issue of all in the early years of the Union period was the Catholic demand for full emancipation. The real struggle for Catholic Emancipation began with the forming of the Catholic Association by Daniel O’Connell the “Great Emancipator”. It is for this reason that the civil and church records are so scarce on our ancestors.
In April 1829, the Catholic Emancipation Act became law and the churches and chapels throughout Ireland started keeping baptismal records and marriage records. The Catholic Church also went of a large building spree and St. Patrick R. C. Church in Dunmanway was erected in the mid 1830’s. This is without doubt the church where Jeremiah and Anne Harrington went to morning Mass with their two sons, James and Timothy before they left for service in North America, never to return home to Ireland.
As we stated previously most church records were not started until 1830 but the church in Dunmanway in Fanlobbus Parish have some records as early as 1818. The results of a search led to two baptismal records for Jeremiah Harrington and Anne “Hannah” Leehane of Mooneyreague townland, County Cork, Ireland. These baptisms were taken from St. Patrick’s baptism register. They were 2 May 1822, Jhn of Jerh Harrington and Anne Lehane and 6 Jun 1824, Mary of Jerh Harrington and Hannah Leehane. Jerh stands for Jeremiah which is the normal Christian name, Jerome as stated in Timothy’s and James’s marriage records is probably an Anglicization. Leehane for Lyons is another problem though they are phonetically similar and Lyons being the Anglicization as stated in The Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght. The LDS Church has the following information recorded in their files.
I personally inspected the records in the sacristy of St. Patrick’s Church in Dunmanway, Ireland in June of 1979 and June 1980. I did not see these baptisms recorded in the records that were shown to me. The information on the family of Timothy Harrington that the LDS Church has been submitted by a member in 1954.
